Maple & Co (London) was one of the most prestigious high end furniture retailers and cabinet makers in the world. Their high point was in the latter part of the Victorian and Edwardian periods. All of their pieces were made in house and of exceptional craftsmanship and quality. They exported their fine antique furniture to many different countries and were well known throughout the interiors world.
Offered for sale is an absolutely exquisite late Victorian/early Edwardian Sheraton revival Maple & Co hand painted mahogany writing desk/bureau.
This sweet piece is hand painted in the neo-classical style; decorations include scrolls, ribbons, wreaths, flowers, musical instruments and other arabesques and Sheraton motifs. The bureau fall front features a really pretty portrait of a young lady. The desk presents with an upper section containing two small drawers and a hinged fall front, complete with working lock and key which opens to reveal a fitted interior. Once opened there is a tooled green leather bound writing surface to offer workspace, with a pen tray and two ink wells and a fitted interior of two further small drawers, pigeon holes and shelves etc. This is supported on a frieze containing a long central drawer; there is the Maple & Co label to the inside of the drawer and the number 474 embossed. The whole is supported on slender tapered legs terminating in spade feet.
The desk is in excellent condition with only very minor paint wear commensurate with age and use. This is an elegant piece perfect to sit anywhere in the room and is absolutely stunning from all angles.
